A navigation controller maintains a stack of view controllers. Any kind of view controller is fair game for the stack. When you design your navigation controller, you ll need to specify the very first view the user sees. That view is the bottommost view in the view hierarchy and its control ler is called the root view controller. The root view controller is the very first view controller the navigation controller pushes onto its stack. As the user selects the next view to look at, a new view controller is pushed onto the stack, and the view it controls is shown to the user. We refer to these new view controllers as subcontrollers. As you ll see, this chapter s application, Nav, is made up of a navigation controller and six subcontrollers.

Out of the box, SMS 2003 does a pretty good job of discovering systems from Active Directory. It s not perfect, though there are a few gaps in its methods. The Enhanced System Discovery tool, available from http://www.systemcentertools.com, assists in filling these gaps. Out of the box, SMS 2003 does not perform Windows NT 4 domain discovery. This tool solves that by enumerating all machines from a list of NT 4 domains, resolving their IP addresses from DNS or WINS, and creating data discovery records for each system.

Take a look at Figure 9 1. Notice the navigation button in the upper left corner of the current view. The navigation but ton is similar to a web browser s back button. When the user taps that button, the current view controller is popped off the stack, and the previous view becomes the current view. We love this design pattern. It allows you to build complex hierarchical applications iteratively. You don t have to know the entire hierarchy to get things up and running. Each con troller only needs to know about its child controllers so it can push the appropriate new controller object onto the stack when the user makes a selection. You can build up a large application from many small pieces this way, which is exactly what we re going to do in this chapter.

The application we re about to build will show you how to do most of the common tasks associated with displaying a hierarchy of data. When the application launches, you ll be presented with a list of options (see Figure 9 2). Each of the rows in this top level view represents a different view controller that will get pushed onto the navigation controller s stack when that row is selected.

For the other four branches, the work task will be suspended. You won t close it, in case the issue is resubmitted by the requestor or the tester finds an issue with the resolution. Instead, the task status will be changed to Waiting on someone else. Also, since you will reuse this task, you ll need to clear the selected action. If the developer edits this task, the action should be set back to the default value of None, which will make them select an appropriate action again. To do this you ll use the UpdateTask activity. Drag an UpdateTask activity to the ifAssignedCompleted branch and rename it updateAssignedResolved. In the Properties window, select taskToken for the CorrelationToken property. You ll need to specify the task properties that are to be changed and the task that is to be updated. You ll do this by binding the TaskProperties and TaskId properties to a dependency property and then setting these values in code. In the Properties window, select the TaskId property and then click the ellipses. In the dialog that appears, click the second tab. Enter the new member name as updateWorkTask_TaskId, as shown in Figure 15-29. Click the OK button to create the class member.
