Figure 9-6. A simple hardware system using feedback Hardware feedback is generally used to improve a system s linearity, bandwidth, and stability. Digital signal filters, known as infinite impulse response filters, use a digital form of feedback to achieve impressive filtering characteristics with relatively simple algorithms. Feedback has also been used in software systems for quite some time. Given a system in which one object calls another, I ll use the word feedback to denote any information returned from the callee back to the caller, during or at the end of an asynchronous operation. When feedback is used only to signal the end of an asynchronous operation, it is sometimes referred to as a completion token.3 While feedback can conceptually be used in purely synchronous systems, it is much more common in asynchronous ones. In asynchronous interactions, the caller might be interested in something about the progress or outcome of commands sent to the callee, such as the following: How far along the command is How much more time the command will take When the command has been completed The outcome of the command When the caller requires feedback, there must exist a separate communication channel to get it from the callee. There are two ways for a caller to get feedback from the callee: 1. The callee pushes feedback to the caller. 2. The caller pulls feedback from the callee. I ll describe each case in more detail.
